In this short post I will show you how to install Oracle SQL Developer on Ubuntu 18.04, Ubuntu 20.04 or even Ubuntu 22.04! Don’t waste tour time, just install it!
Unzip it in the selected folder and go to the unpacked directory and run the script: sqldeveloper.sh. You should see the the following output.
pawel@pawel: ./sqldeveloper.sh Oracle SQL Developer Copyright (c) 2005, 2018, Oracle and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Warning: Nashorn engine is planned to be removed from a future JDK release
After a while, we can start using the software. No you can create connection to some database. Basically SQL Developer was created to manage Oracle Database, but you can install plugins to work with other databases like Hive for instance.
Based on my experience the Oracle SQLDeveloper is slow and heavy tool. Rather, I recommend you something lighter and more universal like DBeaver. Using DBeaver you can easily establish connections to various Databases. When some libraries are missing the DBeaver will automatically select and download the required libs for you. It is a much lighter tool and more reliable tool than Oracle.
Hope the installation were smoothly. Let me know if you liked this post and if it was useful for you! I recommend checking out my other posts on this topic.
